Overview
Kisspeptin-10 is a 10-amino-acid peptide fragment derived from the precursor protein kisspeptin-54, encoded by the KISS1 gene. It serves as the primary endogenous ligand for the G-protein coupled receptor KISS1R. The peptide functions as a critical upstream regulator of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Subcutaneous administration is utilized to stimulate the natural pulsatile release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone.
Kisspeptin-10 binds directly to the KISS1 receptor located on gonadotropin-releasing hormone neurons in the hypothalamus. This binding triggers a signaling cascade that induces the secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone into the hypophyseal portal system. The anterior pituitary gland responds by releasing luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone. These hormones subsequently stimulate the gonads to produce testosterone and estradiol.
